There are many different types of marketing jobs, and your everyday life depends on which field you fall into. Still, there are a few key marketing concepts you’ll need, no matter where you end up:

1. The Customer Journey

To be a successful digital marketer, it’s important to understand the journey people take to become customers. How do they first hear about a product? What factors lead them to trust a company? At what point (and why) do they actually make a purchase? And what happens after someone becomes a paying customer—how do you retain them? Most importantly, what part of that journey will you influence? This is where marketing strategy and communication skills come into play.

In the industry, this journey is called the marketing funnel.

If you work for a small company, you may be responsible for the entire funnel or customer journey. However, at a larger company, you may focus on just one “slice.”

Your best bet is to read the job description thoroughly to get a good idea of ​​what the role entails. Often, content strategist roles are more about big-picture strategy, as the title suggests, and can be more hands-free, more senior and a bit more paid, depending on the role.

The goal of a content strategist is to attract new inbound users and bring in new leads—or, in other words, get their email addresses.

On the other hand, “content marketer” is a broad, umbrella term for anyone who works on content creation and top of the funnel (TOFU) or “inbound” marketing. Content marketing specialist roles may be a little more junior, but that depends on how the title is used in the company.
