7 Essential Job Titles for Digital Marketing Beginners

Digital Marketing’s Power: Effective Strategies

Reaching and interacting with audiences has been completely transformed by digital marketing for businesses. By using digital marketing, companies can leverage various online platforms such as social media, email, and search engines to create targeted campaigns that drive traffic and boost sales. The power of digital marketing lies in its ability to provide measurable results and insights, allowing marketers to fine-tune their strategies for maximum impact. As more businesses recognize the importance of digital marketing, it becomes essential to stay updated with the latest trends and techniques to maintain a competitive edge in the digital landscape.

If you want to work in technology without becoming a designer or developer, digital marketing could be the perfect path for you. Entry-level digital marketing jobs are plentiful in the job market, and there are many ways to find a niche that suits your strengths, interests, and career goals.

In this article, I’ll explain what it means to be a digital marketer and some of the different job titles that fall under digital marketing. Plus, we’ll look at what kind of entry-level digital marketing jobs are available to you if you’re just starting out.

How can I start a job in digital marketing without any prior work experience?

I’ve been doing digital marketing for startups for over five years, but when I first got into tech, I came from the world of code. After realising that my liberal arts bachelor’s degree made me a writer but didn’t prepare me for the job market, I wanted hard skills that employers would actually pay me for.

So, I did some Googling and signed up for the Skillcrush Break Into Tech course, where I learned the HTML, CSS, and JavaScript I needed to build a basic website. After completing my studies, I worked as a freelance web developer.

The thing is, coding introduced me to tech, but I didn’t stick with the developer life for long. After a few months of freelancing, a tech startup hired me to run their blog for ten hours a week.

In just a few months, I was working full-time as a content marketer, managing a content team, making more money than ever before, and getting paid to write—all without leaving the fast-paced tech field I loved. As I learned more about digital marketing jobs and grew up on the sidelines, I felt I stumbled upon a few secrets:

  • 1. Tech companies need digital marketers. Despite all the tech talent in the world, startups can’t grow without people who can get their products to customers.
  • 2. Marketing jobs give you a skill set that makes it possible for you to work in tech, even if you don’t want to be a designer or developer.
  • 3. Newbies can now easily enter the tech field thanks to the abundance of entry-level digital marketing jobs.

What are the benefits of working in digital marketing?

Many digital marketing professions, like other tech professions, let you work from home and offer higher salaries than other junior jobs.

Finding digital marketing jobs for tech newbies is one of the simplest ways to start working in the industry. This is partly because in this career path, you can learn a lot of the skills needed for entry-level marketing jobs once you actually get the job.

But what exactly is digital marketing?

Let’s go back. What is digital marketing, and how is it different from regular marketing?
Marketing means selling or promoting a product or service. That’s what digital marketing is, but it happens on a computer or smartphone.

When you work in digital marketing, instead of relying on subway ads or billboards, you attract and retain customers using email, blog posts, text messages, Internet ads, and more.

While digital marketing includes online marketing, it doesn’t have to be just online, as radio, television, and phone marketing technically involve digital devices as well. Still, in this post, I’m focusing on the digital marketing that happens using the Internet and which tech companies might hire you for.

How Can You Get a Job as a Digital Marketer? Essential Skills for Every Digital Marketer

There are many different types of marketing jobs, and your everyday life depends on which field you fall into. Still, there are a few key marketing concepts you’ll need, no matter where you end up:

1. The Customer Journey

To be a successful digital marketer, it’s important to understand the journey people take to become customers. How do they first hear about a product? What factors lead them to trust a company? At what point (and why) do they actually make a purchase? And what happens after someone becomes a paying customer—how do you retain them? Most importantly, what part of that journey will you influence? This is where marketing strategy and communication skills come into play.

In the industry, this journey is called the marketing funnel.

If you work for a small company, you may be responsible for the entire funnel or customer journey. However, at a larger company, you may focus on just one “slice.”

For example, a content marketer may focus on the top of the funnel, hoping to convince new potential customers to share their email addresses. However, a paid advertising specialist can focus on the bottom of the funnel, where they convince customers to make a purchase.

2. Analyse and optimiseing

When you work in marketing, there’s an endless list of ways to attract customers: Facebook ads, YouTube videos, blog posts, giveaways, emails, Twitter chats, webinars, display ads, Instagram Stories, Instagram ads, Facebook Live videos, LinkedIn Live, and more.

As a result, it’s vital that you understand how to monitor the success of your projects as a digital marketer. Employers want to know that you’ll spend their marketing money wisely, and that means you’ll spend time on the channels you know are working and improve (or drop) the ones that are underperforming.

What are the best entry-level positions in digital marketing?

So then, what are the top positions in digital marketing for a beginner? Here are some of the most common marketing positions you’ll see on job boards that are available to beginners in the industry who want to start their marketing career:

Digital Marketer

Someone with the job title of “digital marketer” or “digital marketing specialist” is typically a digital marketing generalist. In most cases, you’ll find this entry-level position at a small startup or at least a company that’s just starting to build a marketing team. A digital marketer can become a “digital marketing manager” after years of experience in the marketing field.

You’ll need to be able to quickly switch gears and make day-to-day decisions about the best way to spend your time. Depending on your company, you could do everything from writing email marketing newsletters to proposing partnerships with sponsors to managing paid ads.

“Growth marketer” is a related job title, though growth marketing roles are typically more focused on optimisation and technical “hacks” that help companies grow faster without doing more work.

Content strategist, content marketing specialist or content marketer

You will often see these three very similar job titles. Sometimes they’re used interchangeably and sometimes they mean different things (frustrating, I know).

Your best bet is to read the job description thoroughly to get a good idea of what the role entails. Often, content strategist roles are more about big-picture strategy, as the title suggests, and can be more hands-free, more senior and a bit more paid, depending on the role.

The goal of a content strategist is to attract new inbound users and bring in new leads—or, in other words, get their email addresses.

On the other hand, “content marketer” is a broad, umbrella term for anyone who works on content creation and top of the funnel (TOFU) or “inbound” marketing. Content marketing specialist roles may be a little more junior, but that depends on how the title is used in the company.

Blog posts, landing sites, downloadable whitepapers or ebooks, and multimedia content like movies and infographics are common ways content marketers generate new leads.

Content marketers are skilled in writing, editing, and copywriting and may also need to be well versed in SEO. In smaller companies, content strategists are sometimes also in charge of social media marketing.

In general, content jobs attract writers and editors, and if you have a background in writing and an analytical mind, content marketing could be a great choice for you.

The job titles “content creator” and “content producer” are related but generally mean you’ll focus on actually creating content rather than setting strategy, and those titles are sometimes about multimedia content rather than just written content.

SEO Specialist

First of all, what is SEO? SEO, or search engine optimisation, means setting up your site in a way that makes it easy for people to find you when they search for your business or related terms.

A typical job description might say that SEO specialists should know how to do keyword research and turn what they find into an SEO strategy. They also usually need to be comfortable working with metrics and using tracking tools like Google Analytics and Google Search Console, which they’ll work with daily.

Although the title “SEO writer” is similar, it typically means that you will work under the supervision of a content manager or SEO professional and that your primary responsibility will be to create content that adheres to SEO requirements rather than conducting original research.

Marketing Manager

Like digital marketers, marketing managers may work on a variety of marketing tasks, depending on the company. Sometimes, a job called “marketing manager” is the same as a “digital marketer” role. A “marketing manager” may start out as a “marketing associate” at a startup or marketing agency and become a “marketing director” later in their career after gaining significant marketing experience.

That being said, marketing managers are less likely to work on content and social media and more likely to work on marketing campaigns at the bottom of the funnel. Instead of writing blog entries and focusing on search engine optimisation, they will handle ad campaigns, send sales emails, or collaborate with others on marketing initiatives.

Here are some more specific types of marketing managers:

  • Email marketers, who manage email campaigns and other communications with customers
  • Campaign managers, who specialize in campaigns and often sales campaigns

Paid marketing managers often oversee advertising campaigns in three categories and specialise in digital advertising and search engine marketing (SEM).

  1. These are ads that appear in search engines, such as at the top of Google, after you type in a search term.
  2. . Social: These are ads that appear on social platforms like Facebook and Instagram.
  3. Display: These are banner ads that appear on websites and are often related to your search history, a practice called retargeting. (I.e., that thing when you search for socks and all you see are ads for socks for weeks.)

Paid marketing managers often work with large budgets, sometimes up to millions of dollars per year, depending on the company’s “ad spend.” The day-to-day work of these marketing professionals involves working with designers and content teams, sourcing images and copy used in ads, analysing ad performance, and making changes to improve them.

Partnership marketer

Partnership marketers create and manage strategic partnerships, but what does that mean, exactly? They can wear a variety of hats and spend their days meeting big names in the industry, talking about the company’s product at a conference, or even talking to podcasters about ad slots.

There are a few specific types of partnership marketers:

  1. Affiliate managers, who work with people who earn commissions on a company’s products
  2. Influencer marketers, who collaborate with social media personalities to highlight a business’s merchandise in their postings

What is the base salary for an entry-level partnership marketing manager?

$70,694 (Glassdoor)

Like more technical roles, there are plenty of remote or work-from-home digital marketing jobs. And, since you can learn a lot of key marketing skills on the job, digital marketing can be a great option for people looking to make a career change without having to return to class or relocate to a major metropolis.

And what skills do you need before you apply? We’re here to help. The Skillcrush Break Into Tech course package is a comprehensive online programme designed to take you from zero to getting your first job in tech.
